Nijubashi Card, Japan

A Bridge card

As usual a single card.

Some details.

Nijubashi is the official entrance bridge to the Imperial Palace grounds, closed except for important state occasions or delegations from abroad. It is a beautiful stone bridge with graceful arches spanning the moat from the wide gravel plaza to a heavy wood gate. There is a second, metal bridge behind the first, and when viewed at the correct angle, they look like one bridge, giving rise to the name Nijubashi, or “Double level bridge.”

Nijubashi is very photogenic with evergreen trees overhanging the huge rock walls of the moat, and stucco white walls and a traditional, sweeping-roofed guard house in the background. If you are lucky one of the swans living in the moat may gracefully complete the scene.

The bridge is a very popular site, especially among Japanese tourists, so be aware that at peak times it may be hard to stand for long in one place and enjoy the view.

Getting there: Nijubashi is across the gravel plaza from Nijubashimae Station, serving the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda line. It is also close to the Sakuradamon Station serving the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho line. The closest JR station is Tokyo, walk straight ahead for about 10 minutes after exiting the Marunouchi Gate. You will see a small part of the old outer moat about halfway to the Imperial Palace grounds. Tokyo Station is very large, so be sure you leave the correct exit.

Hiroshima Museum of Art

A round building

Hiroshima Museum of Art, a nonprofit organization, was established in 1978 by Hiroshima Bank in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of its foundation. On November 3 of the same year, the Museum was formally opened in a specially designed building at one end of Central Park, located in the heart of Hiroshima City.
The paintings in the possession of the Museum comprise:
  1. Modern European paintings, concentrating on those by French Impressionists,
  2. Japanese oil paintings from after the Meiji Period to the Recent.
These paintings are exhibited permanently in the Museum. From the Gallery1 to the Gallery4 of the Main Hall, about 90 works of Modern European paintings are exhibited, so that visitors can have a general theme of the 150 year history of modern European paintings from the French Romantic period to the Ecole de Paris, with its emphasis on works by French Impressionists. In the Annex gallery are exhibited about 90 works by modern Japanese painters, ranging from the dawn of modern Western style painting in Japan to the present period. Besides maintaining the permanent exhibition as described above, the Museum offers special exhibitions.
